At the end of a home poker night, everyone has a different buy-in and a different stack. Working out who owes whom by hand is slow and argument-prone. A settlement calculator does it in seconds — and returns the fewest possible payments to square the table.

Each player's result is simply their cash-out minus their buy-in. Add those nets up and they balance to zero: the total won equals the total lost. The tricky part is turning a table full of winners and losers into a short list of payments. The naïve approach — everyone settles with everyone — creates far more transfers than needed. The right approach nets all the winners against all the losers and finds the minimum number of transfers that clears every balance.
A worked example
Four players, €20 buy-in each. At the end:
